Vending machines for recreation, leisure and aquatic centres

Smart Market installs free, fully managed smart fridges at recreation, leisure and aquatic centres across Melbourne. Cashless, available whenever the centre is open, with ranges that can be weighted to a healthy choices policy.

The setting

A recreation centre is not a workplace, and vending built for a break room does not suit one.

The people using the machine are members, swimmers, parents waiting through a lesson, junior sport teams, casual visitors and staff, and they are on site at very different times for very different reasons. Trade is spread across the whole day rather than concentrated into two breaks, and it spikes at predictable moments: the end of a swim lesson block, class changeover, the finish of a training session, junior sport on a Saturday morning, and school holidays.

That pattern rewards a machine that is always available, never queued and never out of stock, and it punishes one that is not.

What works in a recreation setting

Healthy choices policy

Recreation centres, councils and community health operators frequently work to a nutrition policy, and the Victorian Healthy Choices framework classifies food and drinks green, amber and red.

We build ranges to a site's policy rather than around it. That means:

This is a normal part of setting up a site for us, not an exception.

Unstaffed hours and 24 hour access

Many centres now offer early morning, late evening or 24 hour gym access with no staff on the desk. A cashless machine works in exactly those hours without supervision.

It is fully cashless, so there is no cash on site, no float to manage, no coin box to empty and nothing worth breaking into a machine for. The door stays locked until a valid card is tapped, so it cannot be opened anonymously, and every item taken is recorded against that transaction.

What it removes from your team's plate

Centre staff typically end up handling the vending machine whether or not it is theirs: the refund when it jams, the sign taped over the coin slot, the phone call to an operator who does not answer.

A Smart Market machine takes that away. There is no coin mechanism and nothing to jam, machine health and stock levels are monitored remotely so faults and stock-outs are picked up rather than reported, and restocking runs on a schedule without needing a staff member to arrange it.

Placement in a centre

The strongest placements are where people already stop: the exit from the pool concourse or change rooms, the gym entrance or exit, reception and the waiting area where parents sit, and the route between the car park and the front desk.

Wet areas, chlorine and high humidity all matter for machine selection and siting, and we work that out on the site visit rather than assuming.

Multi-site operators

We run a network of machines across Melbourne and can roll out to multiple centres under a single arrangement, with consistent ranges, consistent pricing and one point of contact. If you operate several facilities, tell us that up front and we will scope it that way rather than one site at a time.

Is your site a fit? Around 70 or more people on site on a typical day, whether that's staff, members or visitors, and nothing convenient to eat or drink close by. Machines come in a range of sizes and formats, so get in touch and we'll work out the right one for your space.

Frequently asked questions

Can you meet our healthy choices policy?

Yes. We build ranges to a site's nutrition policy, including weighting to the green and amber categories of the Victorian Healthy Choices framework, and we can report on the split of what is stocked.

Does it work when the centre is unstaffed?

Yes. It is cashless and runs whenever the centre is open, including early morning, late evening and 24 hour gym access, with no staff involvement.

Is there cash in the machine?

No. It is fully cashless, so there is no float, no coin box and no cash on site.

What does it cost the centre?

Nothing. We supply, install, stock, clean and maintain the machine and earn from product sales.

Can it go near the pool?

Machine selection and siting take humidity and wet areas into account. We work that out on the site visit.

Can you service multiple centres?

Yes. We can roll out across multiple facilities under one arrangement with consistent ranges and pricing.

Who handles refunds and faults?

We do. There is no coin mechanism and nothing to jam, and machine health is monitored remotely so faults are picked up rather than reported by your staff.
