What to check before signing anything

The free vending market in Melbourne is crowded and the terms vary more than the marketing does. Worth asking:

• Is there a lock-in period? Many free-placement agreements run 12 to 36 months. Ours has none.
• How often is it restocked, and how do they know when to come? Remote stock monitoring is a different level of service to a fortnightly drive-by.
• Who wears breakdowns, and how do they know it has broken? Ask whether machine health is monitored or whether they wait for a phone call.
• What is the range? If the machine cannot refrigerate, it cannot do meals, yoghurt or fresh product, whatever the brochure says.
• How are prices set? Ask for the benchmark. "Market rates" is not a benchmark.
• Can they scale? If you have more than one site, ask whether they can service all of them properly.

What free vending replaces

If you already have a coil machine on site, the comparison is worth making directly. A traditional machine drops product off a spiral, which means jams, and takes coins, which means coins that do not come back. It has far more moving parts, so it breaks down more, and it usually cannot refrigerate, so the range is limited to what survives sitting at room temperature.
